Fault finding

Stiff or jammed headsail furler

Deck gear / Sails (mast, headsail furler, mainsail) · Harken

Leisure & YachtLow difficulty

Symptoms

Difficulty furling or unfurling the sail, squeaking, furling line overriding.

Probable causes

  • Dirty or salt-encrusted drum bearings
  • Misaligned forestay/foil
  • Halyard too tight (halyard wrap)
  • Worn furling line

Solution

Wash the bearings with fresh water and lubricate them with dedicated products, check the halyard angle (anti-wrap deflector), check forestay tension and replace the line. Avoid greases that trap salt.
