Wärtsilä 46 — fuel injection pump leak

Main diesel engine · Wärtsilä

MarineHigh difficulty

Symptoms

Fuel seeping from the injection pump, drop in rail pressure, leak-fuel alarm, smell of fuel in the engine room.

Probable causes

  • Worn HP pump gaskets/O-rings
  • Worn pumping element (plunger/barrel)
  • Damaged high-pressure pipe
  • Loose pipe connections
  • Faulty relief valve

Solution

Isolate the affected pump, replace O-rings and gaskets as per the Wärtsilä 46 manual, check the pumping element and the HP pipes, check the leak-fuel collection system and restore the specified tightening torques. Bleed and test for leaks.

The information on this page is general guidance. It does not replace the manufacturer’s manual or the work of a qualified technician: before any intervention, always check procedures, tightening torques and safety requirements in the official documentation of the machine.
